Match report – Priaulx league
Alderney Nomads 1 Guernsey Rangers 2
Guernsey Rangers deservedly won their first Priaulx match of the season at the fifteenth attempt on Saturday at a sunny and breezy Mount Hale. Alderney went into the game without five regulars including Coach Josh Concanen, who was suspended, but this takes nothing away from a young Rangers side who included four sixteen-year old’s, they battled hard and took their chances. The Nomads will be very disappointed with their overall performance, Alderney’s man of the match Damien Larkin tried hard to spark his teammates, but his prompting couldn’t tip the balance in favour of the home side.
Alderney failed to make the most of an early period of dominance when opportunities fell to several of their strikers, Owen Carre making his home full debut had the first chance following an excellent cross from Joe Blackham, other chances fell to Andrew Lawrence and Damien Larkin. Wind-assisted free kicks powerfully struck by Lee McCormack caused the Rangers defence some problems but their keeper Reece (who had an excellent game) dealt with most threats very capably. Joe Blackham provided an outlet for Nomads down the right side of attack linking well with Owen and Lee, but a clear-cut chance proved elusive. The closest Alderney came to scoring in a mediocre first half was a speculative overhead kick from veteran Steve Concanen that hit the crossbar and bounced over. Half time 0-0
Rangers offered little attacking threat in the first half but came out much brighter for the second and began to apply some pressure on the Nomads defence. The game was more even and on balance Rangers looked the side more likely to score. Instead Alderney won a penalty when Joe Blackham was felled in a tussle with Reece chasing a Dante Walker through ball. Damien Larkin coolly converted the penalty low to the keeper’s left. 1-0 Nomads then had a couple of opportunities to put some breathing space between them and Rangers, but these were spurned, and they were made to pay. A long high ball led to miscommunication between Steve Concanen and keeper Jamie Laband, resulting in a free header for Rangers’s Shane Billien that nestled in the Alderney net. 1-1 to the delight of their travelling support.
Neither team could get a grip on the game after that and it appeared to be heading for a draw until Rangers’ Bradley Foss generated the one real moment of quality late on with a fierce left foot shot that beat Jamie Laband to his left hand side. 1-2 that goal deserved to win the match and The Baker Cup which was presented to the Rangers captain by Alderney FC President Alan Adamson.
A day to forget for Alderney FC but congratulations to Rangers on picking up their first points of the season and regaining The Baker Cup.
