Match report – Priaulx league
The Nomads welcomed visitors UCF Sylvans to the arsenal for the first time in two seasons following last year’s no show and were looking to get back to winning ways with this back to back home game. It was an awful day weather wise, persistent drizzle but perfect conditions for entertaining football. Coach Josh made changes to the starting 11 and the formation, in came Ricky Moore, Jamie Laband and Ciaran Stretton, with captain Ross moving back into defence, Stretton returning up-front. After a positive start by the Nomads it was Sylvans who found themselves two up in no time, just as they did in August, their frontline of Kyle Smith and Ally Venosa looked sharp with neat interchanges, and it was Smith that quickly found himself on a hatrick! His 2nd goal beating Laband from the inside of his post. Something special was needed now for the Nomads to get back into this game and start creating a few chances. Matt Aldcroft went off injured a calf problem and on came industrious Lee McCormack. The game changed somewhat when Sylvans, Le Tissier on 24mins being sent to the sin bin for the obligatory 10 mins, this seemed to spark the Nomads into life. First shot on goal following good work by Damien Larkin he played in Joe Blackham his shot was well saved, Josh had a shot over the bar as Alderney were starting to advance on goal then Dante Walker found himself in space close to the by-line inside the 18yard box his shot/cross was fumbled by the keeper and the ball ended in the back of the net 1-2 soon after Blackham was advancing in on goal he was completely flattened by keeper Nick Batiste a clear penalty, up stepped Benfield who has previously scored 3 already this season, he made it 2-2 no problem. Josh had a pile driver blocked just before Le Tissier came back on, a costly sinbin. Sylvans boosted by being back to 11 nearly made it 2-3 a neat chip over Laband by Venosa just missed the outside of the post, then just before half time it was Alderney that came close to scoring as Con saw his excellent header being tipped over the bar, another well-worked corner as the ball fell to Benfield his strong shot was blocked. A period of tough tackling with Parry involved in exchanges with his counterpart Le Poiduin in the greasy surface conditions. An entertaining half with much for the home support to talk about.
Half Time 2-2
The rain continued to drive down, viewing from the cars and in the clubhouse seemed the best vantage points, Alderney kicked off towards Fort Albert and soon went on the attack, winning a corner, a Parry header was well saved. The home team continued with the long diagonal ball which was often defended well, Sylvans Le Tissier out muscled Josh and had a shot from outside the box that was just over Labands bar, Josh then conceded a freekick the forceful shot struck the wall which left Benfield on his haunches. With 50 gone Walker wins a corner a clever back header by Con hits the back of the net, the supporters in the clubhouse cheered loudly as they thought he’d made it 3! Alderney continued to press with some great passing between Josh, Parry and Larkin, a disputed corner was then awarded the ball was met by Con whose powerful header this time did find the back of the net 3-2, a goal that Alderney deserved. Then a little chaos in Alderney’s box with resulted in a goal line clearance from man of the match Benfield, the resulting corner was well defended with many blue shirts throwing themselves at the ball, this time McCormack blocked the shot. Sylvans still looked dangerous the game was not over yet, a few substitutions were made by the visitors, then they were reduced to 10 men as Le Poiduin was sent off for a challenge on Parry a 2nd yellow. With the time on the clock showing 85mins there was an almighty scramble in Alderney’s six-yard box, a good point blank save by Laband the ball ping ponged about which
resulted in Benfield clearing the ball of the line again! Somehow Alderney survived, on came youthful Carre who replaced the hard working Blackham, and Carre himself wasn’t far from a late Walker cross. However late drama saw Parry receiving his 2nd yellow card as he pulled back his player as Sylvans broke in search of the equaliser, (one for the team). The game ended with plenty of action for the support to discuss in the club after, a just about deserved win for the home team and welcome 3 points.
