Match report – Priaulx league
Our first home game of the season, on the back of the defeat away to Northerners last Saturday, clear blue skies with just a gentle breeze. The lack of rain meant the playing surface being typically barren, hard, dusty surface for the time of year making it difficult for both teams. Alderney made a change from last week’s starting 11 with Lee McCormack slotting into midfield, Damien Larkin being not available, a 3, 4, 3 attacking line up. The game started off with the referee sending Rovers player Webb to the sin bin presuming for dissent, this is a new rule being trialled in the Priaulx league and other lower leagues this season. Alderney had a great chance to take the lead when Dante put through the lively Joe Blackham who broke clear on goal unfortunately his shot was well saved. Rovers first attempt came from a speculative shot by Le Tocq which forced a good save from JT, they did look a threat from set pieces due to the size of their players, the corners were very well defended by Ross and Jermaine. Then the goal came, following a free kick from Josh which hit the wall, the ball fell to John Adamson who’s cross from the right touchline was perfect for Ross Benfield whose superb header gave the keeper no chance 1-0. Dante nearly made it 2 with a curling shot just wide of the top corner, another chance from some good work between Josh and Joe his cross was just missed by Con who appeared at the far post. Rovers had a period of pressure and a couple of free kicks again defended well, and when the ball did breach JT was in commanding form. On the stroke of half time some superb football and passing between Josh, Corky, Dante put through Joe who’s shot was saved again. The move deserved a goal, and would have graced a much higher level, even the referee was impressed! He told me after the game. More late chances fell to Joe Blackham and a resulting scramble somehow the ball didn’t find the net.
Half time 1-0
Straight after the re-start 2-0 a brilliant cross by McCormack found John Adamson who hit the post the ball rebounded onto the keeper and went in. Alderney really did come out of the traps! Applying pressure on Rovers defence Corky had a good chance but his shot missed the target. Goal 3-0 Joe found himself in space beating his marker well and neatly slotted into the net a well-deserved goal. Straight after, Alderney were immediately on the attack – Penalty Blackham a constant threat was fouled in the box a clear pen, captain Benfield made it 4-0 two goals in two minutes! Car horns blasted! Josh Concanens free kick rifled into the cross bar what a strike could have been 5, Ross came close with a header just over, a half that the home team completely dominated. The last 20 mins allowed 3 subs to come on youthful players Owen Carre went upfront, with just behind him Jack Ives, and Simon Benfield replaced Con. It was great to see the youngsters make their home debuts and this was mentioned in the club when new president Alan Adamson did his speech. The latter stages of the game Rovers had some chances, but the clean sheet was preserved with JT making a few fine saves. The game ended a terrific display well appreciated by the home support, a brilliant result.
