Match report – Priaulx league

The walk to the Arsenal was an interesting one, watching the huge waves crashing over the breakwater, a gale force 7/8 blowing in a s/w direction was what both teams had to content with today. Alderney’s team lined up with three enforced changes, both Josh Concanen and Jermaine Parry were suspended, and Andrew Adamson out injured with his fractured leg sustained in the last away match.
With the wind behind Alderney as they kicked towards Fort Albert the smaller crowd was hoping to see plenty of shots rained in on the Manzur keeper making use of the wind advantage. The conditions at times were quite atrocious with the almost horizontal rain coming down, which made playing football above head height almost impossible at times. Alderney’s first corner just blew straight out into touch! Lee McCormack’s long throw provided problems in the Manzur box as the wind helped it along some distance. Following a rare passage of play in Alderney’s half a neat bit of football provided a counter attack between the busy Marian State and Joe Blackham, soon after that a superb strike on goal which rattled the bar by John Adamson, had the Manzur keeper beaten. With the rain driving down, the away keeper was certainly having kicking problems, a quick snapshot by State was tipped just past the post. Alderney’s best chance then fell to no9 Ciaran Stretton who ran onto a through ball and in on goal a one on one, unfortunately the conditions certainly contributed to the miss kick. More half chances fell to Con and to Stretton with shots just off target. The first half almost completely spent in Manzur’s half without finding that crucial goal. With time running out a free kick was conceded by Manzur for a foul on Adamson, 40 yards from goal, the kick was taken by State, the shot was a superb torpedo like trajectory but the Manzur keeper was equal to it and tipped the ball over the bar. Half time 0-0

The talk in the clubhouse at half time was about the missed chances and how will the home team cope against the wind. Early Alderney pressure in the second half resulted in a blocked shot on goal by Richard Moore and then Con. Manzur then started to get in to the game a little and the lively Rihoy was beginning to cause problems and had their first real chance with a shot just over JT’s crossbar. JT certainly was having difficulty with the goal kicks his first effort caught the wind and very nearly resulted in a Manzur corner! Quite a sight. More sustained pressure now from Manzur resulted in a string of corners with shots on raining in from no3 Goncalves and no10 Holden, JT was forced to make another save this time a deflected shot looked like it was going into the net. With this storm weathered by the home team a superb ball by the Simon Benfield, (who had a solid game in defence) on his return to the team produces a counter attack a Dante Walker cross nearly fell to State. Joe Blackham then ran in on goal skilfully beating two players but couldn’t beat the keeper unfortunately. A corner for Alderney was well met by Con his header did go in the net but the referee spotted an infringement and it was disallowed. For a push. Alderney did try to play the ball on the ground and a fine free kick taken by Benfield was controlled well by Stretton his half volley shot was just over this would have been a fine goal. Coach Josh Concanen who was forced to watch the game from the clubhouse, sent a message to the bench, and on came Matt Aldcroft into defence this allowed captain Ross Benfield to move up front to hopefully find that crucial goal. With time running out one last chance fell to the home team and some good work by Adamson and the resulting corner the ball fell to man of the match State whose shot was deflected just wide. The game ended, both teams playing the game in good spirit and did their best in very difficult conditions. The game was refereed very well, no bookings issued! Alderney now have 27 points just one below last years total! And remain in 2nd spot
We will welcome back Manzur again in March for a league fixture and a reserve game, something to look forward too.
