Match report – Priaulx league

Alderney Nomads 1 Northerners 3

Football made a return to the island on Saturday, when the Nomads welcomed a young and in form North team to Alderney, on a beautiful sunny autumn afternoon, perfect for watching football. Quite a crowd turned out hoping to see the Nomads carry on where they left off last week when the beat Vale Recreation. The home side were sporting their new blue home kit with new sponsor Stenham Trustees on the front and welcomed into the squad for his Priaulx debut Tom Cosherill and home debutant Lucas Parry.

North started off the brighter of the two sides and were the first to have an attempt at goal a shot by Mollet as he turned Lucas down on the far right hand side of the pitch. Alderney countered and some good football between Josh and Marian, who created himself some space and a shot from just outside the box was just over the Fort Albert end bar. Soon after another good move came direct from keeper Carre who’s clearance accurately found Walker who linked with Marian and Liam Connor who’s shot again went over the crossbar no troubling ex Nomad player Josh Tugby. It was North that began to get a foothold and apply some pressure in Alderney’s half with a series of corners, initially defended superbly by captain Ross Benfield, heading clear, blocking shots throwing his body on the line, something the home supporters have been used to seeing. But on 17mins Domaille scored with a neat finish to make it 0-1, North continued to press and were causing Alderney problems particularly down the left-hand side, coach Josh Concanen made a change taking Lucas Parry off and on came Tom Cosherill. Sam Murray breaks through the home side’s defence it could have been 2, tackled at the last minute resulting in yet another corner for North, who have certainly dominated the last 30mins of the first half, and right on the stroke of half time a goal line clearance by Josh keeps the score at 0-1, Alderney can be a little fortunate to be going in only 1 down.

Half Time Alderney 0 – 1 Northerners

Change of formation for the 2nd half for Alderney, Josh changing things around and it certainly appeared to be working, who had their first corner of the game neatly worked short corner the ball fell to Stretton whose close-range shot rattle the cross bar so close to being the equaliser! A 2nd corner falls to Benfield whose shot was blocked, well, freekicks were now being awarded for the home team fouls on Parry and Cosherill, but the attempt by Concanen was well defended, the home support was enjoying how Alderney started this half with good possession of the ball and pressure. North’s first outing into the home side’s half was a quick counter attack which Murray attempted an overhead kick went wide. Alderney continued to create chances a looping cross from Josh just evaded Parry another chance to equalise went begging, it was a series of pressure the home support new a goal was needed. The best chance of the half fell to sub Wallsbridge, another counter attack and a free header which should have been 2, Dante Walker broke into the box beating a couple of defenders but couldn’t release a shot on target. On 70mins a corner from North resulted in some ping pong reaction with the ball falling kindly to Alvarez to make it 0-2 immediately after the re-start the ball finds Ross who is in space down the near side of the pitch his super cross finds Parry who makes it 1-2 with a fine finish. With 15 to go hope amongst the crowd that a point can be rescued, Owen Carre comes on for the busy Tom Cosherill who was impressive on his debut. Then out of nowhere a long range shot from outside the box by Mollet goes through Carre and makes it 1-3 Alderney continued to press and work hard chances fell to Walker and Parry but with time running out it was North that held on to claim victory. The Nomads certainly had their chances and were somewhat unfortunate the way the game ended, but overall North were the better team and were certainly more clinical in front of goal.
