Match report – Priaulx league
Alderney Nomads 0 Rovers AC 1
Alderney succumbed to a single Rovers goal at a sun-drenched Mount Hale on Saturday, continuing their prolonged period of poor results. An inability to mount any sort of attacking threat continues to thwart the Nomads and although they battled hard and the defence and midfield competed well against the Priaulx league leaders they never seriously looked like earning a point once they went behind just after the half-hour mark in the first half. Alderney’s only shot on target in the whole game was a long-range free kick by player coach Josh Concanen that sailed straight into the Rovers keeper’s arms in the first half. The decisive goal stemmed from a serious mistake by JT in the Alderney goal who was caught in possession in the penalty area by Rovers Blair Howitt, who calmly slotted the ball into an empty net. A shame for the Nomads goalkeeper, who otherwise had a fine game, handling a number of threatening crosses securely and keeping out some fierce shots, particularly in the second half. In truth Rovers looked the only side likely to score throughout the game and but for some wayward finishing on a number of occasions they would have won much more comfortably. With the quality of Guernsey FC players such as Frank Tobin and Thomas Strawbridge in the Rovers defence it was always going to be a tough ask but too often the Nomads lacked any cohesion going forward and they ran out of ideas. A number of the Alderney players are carrying injuries and both coach Josh Concanen and skipper Ross Benfield picked up knocks during the game as they battled hard to keep Rovers out. Alderney used three substitutes in the second half as players tired; Mikey Crowley and Lee Renouf for Liam Conner and Owen Carre, and Matt Aldcroft for Josh Conancen, but it didn’t alter the pattern of the game which saw Rovers pressing forward until the end. Ross ended up with the man of the match award from Dino Simeone of DHS for a faultless and courageous display, typical of his efforts all season. Corky Stretton was not far behind for a tireless, skillful and committed contribution in a losing cause. The Nomads have to regroup quickly before a bottom of the table clash next weekend against Rangers in Guernsey, a game that may well determine who finishes up with the Priaulx wooden spoon. Rangers are currently three points behind Alderney.
The attendance was 96 people and one very well-behaved dog. A minute’s silence was held before the game in memory of the young Manzur FC footballer, who passed away last week.
The Nomads Man of the Match awarded by Dino Simeone from DHS was Ross Benfield kindly sponsored by Michelle Benfield.
