Match report – Priaulx league
Only the 2nd home league fixture of the season for Alderney as they welcomed championship contenders St Martins AC to the Arsenal, Alderney being unbeaten confidence was high amongst the squad and large crowd. The earlier rain had stopped with the weather perfect for football. Coach Josh Concanen set up the team with a back three, two attacking wingbacks, Richard Moore and Jermaine Parry providing the bite in midfield hoping to create chances for the forward line. It was St Martins that came first out of the traps, forcing early saves by JT from free kicks conceded just outside Alderneys box. Alderney attacking towards Fort Albert forced the first corner on 10 mins following good work by John Adamson and the busy Ciaran Stretton, the resulting corner was met by captain Ross Benfield his powerful header was just wide. Confidence was starting to grow for the home team neat interchanges two, three passes as Alderney were trying to play football. On 15mins St Martins conceded a free kick just outside their box and instead of taking a strike at goal, an attempt was created from a series of short passes clearly worked on in training. It would have been a very clever goal. Further long-range shots were straight at the visiting keeper by Richard Moore and Joe Blackham, after 30 mins St Martins were trying to get back into the game but Alderneys defended well with players throwing themselves at the ball well as the ball scrambled around the 6-yard box. Alderney countered and a great ball by Ross put through Dante Walker who won another corner, the ball came to Steve Concanen despite being from an acute angle his fierce shot forced a good save, so close to the opening goal. Marian State had one of the last shots of the first half just wide, a half in which the home side dominated possession and were unlucky not to be in the lead. St Martins looking dangerous from set plays at time.
Half time 0-0
The second half started with Alderney again in the ascendency with both Joe and John causing problems on both flanks, running at the opposition at every opportunity, some of the crosses were first class but unfortunately the lads in the box couldn’t get on the end of them. St Martins first attack of this half caused another scramble in the box resolutely defended again, JT was forced into making a fine double save. On 65 mins John Adamson was booked just inside his own half the free kick was drilled deep into Alderneys half, the Ref spotted an infringement, apparent holding by Richard Moore. An excellent strike on goal and the ball went in off the post JT had no chance goal scored by striker Hale 0-1
The goal seemed to create added pressure for Alderney, more bookings and indiscipline, with the game being stopped by the ref to who continued to talk to many of the home players who were getting frustrated. With the game now being played in Alderneys half the home team were beginning to struggle to make headway in seeking the equaliser. St Martins who were quite physical at times and clearly had the larger players some of the off the ball challenges were going unnoticed by the referee, adding to the frustration of the players and supporters. 15 to go Lee McCormack replaced Dante with a few changes to the shape saw Josh move into Midfield and Ross up front, he soon forced an excellent save and tip over the bar with a shot outside the box. Down at the other end St Martins had a late corner, some time wasting was going on which resulted in yet another yellow card by the referee, and a goal was conceded following a mix up and a mis directed pass across our own box with seconds left 0-2 Lee was booked for complaining about the challenge which again went unnoticed. So the unbeaten run comes to an unfortunate end, 6 bookings in total for Alderney, most in the crowd thought it was a game in which we could have won. It doesn’t get any easier as nest Saturday’s trip to Guernsey see the blues take on the other title contenders Rovers AC
