Alderney Nomads Football club first home fixture
v Guernsey Rangers FAC kindly sponsored by the Campania Inn
Saturday 8th September kick off 1.00pm at the Arsenal football ground
As Alderney Nomads FC kick of the new season in the Priaulx league with their first home fixture of the season v Rangers, the match has extra significance. The teams will be competing for the Baker Cup, this used to be a regular fixture but has not been played for since 1991!
This cup was first played for in 1978, Rangers were victorious then and have been in most of the games, apart from in 1989 when Alderney won for the first time.
The competition has intriguing history, Mr Baker an Alderney resident bought the cup and set up a fund to pay for Rangers to go over to Alderney every year, which provided Alderney with a competitive football match, quite a generous gesture.
The cup game unfortunately ended when the funds ran out and hasn’t been played for since, until this season that is.
The cup has remained in the possession of Rangers for the last 27 years and has recently received a polish and clean in readiness for the September fixture.
Please do come along your support would be very welcome for this league and Baker cup fixture.
If anyone has more information about the previous Baker cup games, and Mr Baker himself, please contact firstname.lastname@example.org as this would be useful editorial in the new look match programme.
